Lambert family papers, 1798-1905, (bulk, 1798-1862).

This collection consists of the papers of Pierre Antoine Lambert (d. 1827) and of his son, Pierre Alexandre Lambert (1806-1895). Included are diplomas, medical certificates, a thesis, a slave agreement, correspondence, photographs, clippings, account books and other financial records, patient ledgers and prescriptions, baptismal records, contracts, passports, legal opinions, scientific and mathematical papers, political pamphlets, a theater ticket, a map, and other handwritten and printed material.

The Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, was founded as L'Hôpital des Pauvres de la Charité in 1736, the bequest of shipbuilder Jean Louis. Subsequent buildings were erected in 1743, 1785, 1815, 1832, and 1939. The hospital, which was the city's only facility for the mentally ill until a state asylum opened in 1848, admitted men, women, and children throughout the 1840s. Pierre Antoine Lambert (d. 1827) was a native of Saint-Domingue, who later lived in Cuba on his coffee plantation, and then settled in New Orleans, La., where he owned a pharmacy, practiced medicine, and taught at the Collége d'Orléans.
